Cool Brain Food- About Gatorade

By Bryon Zirker

A brief history of Gatorade. Gatorade was created in 1965 by four doctors at the U of Florida for the universities football team, the Gators. It was first called "Go Gator" however after 40 years and 3 billion a year in sales it still seems to have become an effective drink to stem off dehydration in atheletes.

The science in brief. Fluids and electrolytes lost by the players through sweat during activities was not being replenished. Also the high amounts of carbohydrates used left players energy levels lower. Researches took these findings to the lab. The result was a formulation that precisely balanced the carbohydrate-electrolyte relationship into a beverage to adequately replace the lost components during training and sweating by players.
