B-Vitamin-The Bone Builder

By Bryon Zirker

Are we all getting enough folate to fight osteoporosis?
Nutritionists have long lauded the wonderful health
benefits of folate. This nutrient reduces homocysteine,
the amino acid that contributes to heart disease and
Alzheimer's. New research coming from the Hordaland
Homocysteine Study (HHS) shows that homocysteine poses
another health risk the dreaded thinning of bones in
women.

These Researchers followed a group of more than 18,000
people for seven years. Those the reported raised
homocysteine levels not only showed an increased risk
of cardiovascular disease, depression, and cognitive
decline, also osteoporosis.

Some good news however, is that finding folate in foods
is a lot easier than it has been before. Eat a whole-foods
diet rich in dark super leafy greens and beans. Use whole
-grain cereals fortified with folic acid. Make sure your
chosen multivitamin supplies at least 400 mcg of folic
acid. These important steps will help protect your bones,
brain, and heart.
